The President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron spoke by telephone with the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin. He recalled his commitment to a regular and frank dialogue with Russia. He welcomed the dynamics of Franco-Russian bilateral relations in the spirit and in application of the orientations defined during the visit to France of President Putin at Versailles last May. In this regard, he stressed the importance of the links between the Russian and French civil societies, which will be reinforced by the launch, by the end of the year, of the Trianon dialogue. On Syria, the President of the Republic recalled the red lines defined at Versailles on the prohibition of chemical weapons and the imperative of humanitarian access. He emphasized the need to renew the mandate of the Joint Investigation Mechanism at the United Nations and the OPCW in the coming weeks. This mechanism, set up with the agreement of Russia, and whose methods and impartiality are indisputable, has proved its effectiveness in establishing the responsibilities in the chemical attacks, including that of April 4 in Khan Cheikhoun . The permanent members of the Security Council must put an end to the use of chemical weapons and preserve the non-proliferation regime, the invocation of which constitutes a danger to collective security. France will not give in on the fight against impunity and the full and complete dismantling of the Syrian chemical program. The head of state also called on Russia to use all its influence on the Damascus regime so that humanitarian access is guaranteed and effective as soon as possible, especially in Eastern Ghouta where hundreds of thousands of people are in a situation of great distress. The President of the Republic took note of the exchanges held during the Astana process. He stressed the importance of moving forward on the political process as the only way to achieve lasting peace in Syria and thus prevent the re-establishment of terrorist sanctuaries. In this regard, he recalled that all efforts to achieve a political settlement of the Syrian crisis must be within the framework of the United Nations Security Council. He recalled the willingness of France to work immediately with Russia, all permanent members of the Security Council and the regional powers, to allow a credible political transition, preserve the unity of Syria and protect the minorities. The two Presidents also spoke of the need for a rigorous implementation of the nuclear agreement with Iran. The two Presidents agreed to continue their exchanges and to fix future visits between Russia and France.“ Source Elysee See also article : PRESIDENT MACRON WELCOMES VLADIMIR PUTIN AT CHATEAU VERSAILLES AS A TSAR VISIT OF THE EXHIBITION PIERRE THE GREAT
